Implemented in stages in Dare County, school year 2008-2009 was the first year that AVID was in place in all district middle and high schools. AVID was first introduced at Manteo Middle School as a pilot for selected seventh graders in 2005. The AVID elective is offered for selected students in grades 6-12 in Dare County .The three main components of the program are academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities including community service.
AVID candidates are typically first generation college goers, students in the academic "middle" who are capable of succeeding at more challenging coursework. AVID students are enrolled in honors and advanced placement classes and attend the AVID elective taught within the school day by a trained AVID teacher. Many teachers report that they can identify AVID students in their classrooms based on noteworthy behaviors and study skills that set them apart from the average student.
Key to a successful AVID program is a site teacher - a respected site instructional leader - who organizes curriculum as well as activities, and is committed to serving the needs of AVID students.
Importantly, AVID teachers also work with colleagues to implement AVID methodologies schoolwide, to place students in college preparatory curriculum, and to work with counselors to help students and their families navigate the scholarship and college application process. AVID’s research-based teaching strategies, curriculum, and trainings are used not only in the AVID elective class, but by subject-area teachers schoolwide.
Classroom speakers have also contributed to the success of AVID students in Dare County. Community and civic leaders share personal stories with these young people to encourage them to set and pursue their goals.
