Dare County Schools School Nutrition Director, Carol Sykes, together with a group of eight school nutrition employees traveled to San Antonio, Texas to join about 6500 others from across the country at the School Nutrition Association Annual National Conference July 9 through 14, 2016.  The local School Nutrition Association of Dare raised the funds to fly the group there and to pay for expenses.  Fundraisers included catering the runners’ breakfasts at the Wells Fargo Flying Pirate half marathon, selling Bertie County peanuts, providing the volunteer luncheon for the OBSE marathon and more.

The conference provides a selection of top quality professional development classes, internationally known general session speakers, a trade show, culinary demonstrations, and networking opportunities.  Selections of over one-hundred education lectures were offered.  Plenary speakers included a panel of Golden Olympians featuring Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Shannon Miller, and Rowdy Gaines; TV host of “The Chew,” Carla Hill; and journalist John Quinones, host of the ABC TV series, “What Would You Do.”

School Nutrition Director Carol Sykes commented, “I am very proud of all the participants in the Annual National Conference of the School Nutrition Association.  They are a very dedicated team and care so much about their service in the school nutrition program in Dare County Schools.  They worked hard on raising the funds to be able to attend the event.  They took pleasure in the team building experience, the travel, meeting peers from across the nation and the inspiration provided by the conference.”

Sykes continued that “All from North Carolina were excited to see Dr. Lynn Harvey of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Child Nutrition Section Chief be installed as the national President-Elect of the School Nutrition Association.  Dr. Harvey will become the national president next year in Atlanta."
