New in Dare County Schools for 2014-2015

In addition to new faces in new places in Dare County Schools, there are some new things to look forward to this year.

New faces -

Replacing Dr. John Donlan as Principal at First Flight Middle School will be Tim Albert, who has served as the school’s assistant principal since 2007.

Joining Albert at First Flight Middle School will be Dave Guiley, who has been the assistant principal at Kitty Hawk Elementary School since 2011. Guiley served as administrative intern at First Flight Middle School from 2007 to 2009.

Debbie Shepheard, assistant principal at First Flight Elementary School since 2006, will become assistant principal at Kitty Hawk Elementary School.

Dr. Jodie Mitchum was promoted from an administrative intern at Manteo Elementary School to Assistant Principal at First Flight Elementary School, where she'll join Principal Freda Ballard at First Flight Elementary School.

Joining Manteo Elementary School's administrative team, Principal Mary Anne Wetzel and Assistant Principal Dr. Lisa Colvin, is Administrative Intern Tami Harper. Harper was a social studies teacher at First Flight High School.

The Central Office is re-organizing as well. Both Dr. John Donlan and Terry McGinnis, formerly principals at First Flight Middle and Manteo Middle respectively, have been moved to the Central Office. McGinnis will assume the responsibilities of Jean Taylor, who has moved into the position of Career and Technical Education Director, following the retirement of Kathey Lamm.  Donlan will share responsibilities resulting from the departure of Director of Secondary Instruction Nancy Griffin, with Trip Hobbs, formerly Personnel Director. Sherry Wescott steps into the role that was left by Anne Newbern, retired, and will supervise the NC Student Information System.

Teresa Twyne has become Principal of Manteo Middle School; she was formerly the principal of Dare County Alternative School, which is in transition this year.

Dare County Alternative School -

Dare County Alternative School, with sites located temporarily at both First Flight High School and Manteo High School, is an option for students in grades 9-12. If a student graduates from the Alternative School, he or she participates in the graduation ceremony as designated by the student's attendance zone and receives a diploma from the Alternative School. L'Tanya Murray is the Alternative School Program Manager. For more information, contact Murray by email,

Student Laptop Initiative  -

Due to the delay in receiving information regarding state funding allocations for this school year, the district is now planning to phase in implementation of this initiative over the next two years. The goal is to distribute laptops to students in grades 9-12 during the 2nd quarter of this school year and to students in grades 6-8 during the next school year. Details will be forthcoming.

and Parent Portal -

Parent Portal gives parents and students access to realĀtime information including attendance, grades and assignments. With Parent Portal everyone stays connected: students stay on top of assignments, parents are able to access their child's progress and grades, and teachers can instantly share information from their gradebook with parents and students. Families with multiple students can also set up their accounts to view all of their students at one time with one login. Expect more information soon.
