District AVID Celebration
Dare County School's AVID Class of 2014
Dare County Schools Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) graduates were honored on May 15 with a celebration at the Dare Center in Manteo. The program featured 30 graduates from all three of the district's high schools - Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies, First Flight High School, and Manteo High School. 

AVID teacher Alfie Wheeler (MHS) opened and closed the program. Speeches were given by AVID students Eriselda Selmi (FFHS), Hannah Lovell (CHSSCS), and Sarah Smith (MHS), and by AVID alums Ivan Howard (MHS 2011) and Toni Selby (MHS 2012). Both Howard and Selby emphasized how AVID lessons and strategies have continued to help them succeed in college. AVID teachers Lisa Duke (FFHS) and Karla Jarvis (CHSSCS) attended as well.

AVID teacher Sarah Pritchard gave a special recognition to Director of Secondary Instruction Nancy Griffin, who was honored by the three principals, John Luciano (MHS), Arty Tillett (FFHS) and Beth Rooks (CHSSCS). Child Nutrition Director Carol Sykes awarded Mollie Shannon Gallop scholarships to MHS' Gianela Zafra and FFHS' Tyler Jones.  


The Dare Education Foundation's Board Chair Jim Perry awarded DEF scholarships to CHSSCS' Ximena Briones, MHS' Sarah Smith and FFHS' Samantha Sgaviccho.  Providing the AVID program in grades 6-12 in all Dare schools has been a partnership between DEF and DCS since 2005. 

Honor cords were awarded by the principals, given to graduates of their schools. Honor Cord recipients must meet at least 5 of 7 requirements: 
  • Weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Successful completion of 3 or more years of AVID
  • Successful completion of senior year in AVID
  • Participation in at least three extra-curricular activities (can be one each year)
  • 60 hours of community service
  • Completion of SAT, ACT, or ASSET
  • Completion of 1 or more AP class/test
And must be accepted into a two-year, four-year, or trade school.  Thirteen MHS graduates and six FFHS graduates received Honor Cords.
